5:03 pm
the area and all walks of life. the one we talked to said he heard about the 25-year-old african-american man who was killed in hayward friday, that was oscar grant's best friend and the violence enrages him and should serve as a call to service. >> it's happening so frequent in the bay area and i'm not just talking oakland. i'm talking across the border, alameda, san joaquin county, this happens so much. it's like everybody is sitting around not -- saying -- other individuals aren't doing. the question is what are you doing? what are you doing to help out your community? and that's why i'm involved. >> money for the program is from the department of education thanks to help from congresswoman barbara lee. if this is successful it will be rolled out in 56 other cities across the united states. the group plans on having at least a couple more recruitment

5:05 pm

5:06 pm
august 2 the government will exceed its debt ceiling and the government would face a potentially default on obligations leading perhaps to higher interest rates. democrats say it would be catastroph catastrophics. most republicans disagree. here the political tide appears to be changing a bit. kris sanchez and larry gers stin have a look. >> let's start with the question of why the shift in direction. >> a couple of things here. look, not so long ago it was the other direction altogether. we voted in, we voted out affirmative action. all that has changed. it's changed tremendously in the last couple of years. why? now we're seeing efforts to go ahead and allow in state tuition for undocumented immigrants, aid for undocumented immigrants, changing the tone of california.
5:07 pm
>> let's talk about the reason. is it policy, economics? what is it? >> a couple things. first latinos are now approaching 40% of the population. that's a lot of voices. policymakers are aware. the governor and the legislature are both of the same party now. that's rare in california and they are on the same page so with that they are likely to be together when it comes to major policy initiatives much more than in the past. third, i think it speaks determination of one legislator, from southern california who has been relentless in pursuing this idea of assistance for undocumented immigrants. >> a lot of policy on immigration is federal. what does this mean for the state? >> for the state it means that no doubts further incorporation of latinos in california's main stream. and for the democrats it means a continued wooing of latinos and they have been successful. so that puts the republicans a little outside the main stream,
5:08 pm
gives them something to think about. no doubt the more californians move in this direction, the more the rest of the nation will listen. >> thank you very much, larry. >> and a reminder you can read more about larry's political insight at nbcbayarea.com. women's world cup action took the bay area and much of the world by storm with a dramatic finish. how much fun does that look. thousands of bay area families and fans gathered in san francisco to watch the u.s. take on japan in the world cup final, look at all of those people. most rooted for the u.s., some for japan. in the end it was celebrating the game of women's soccer. >> i'm a huge soccer fan. i think it's the best game in the world because the players play in different countries, there's a wonderful sportsmanship about the game. it's just it's the world's game. that's why i love it.
